Jets News And Analysis: Jets Trade Derrick Mason To Houston Texans

Several outlets have confirmed the Jets traded wide receiver Derrick Mason to the Houston Texans for a seventh-round draft pick. Mason was benched in favor of rookie Jeremy Kerley against the Patriots Sunday, with coach Rex Ryan dismissing reports it was over him speaking poorly of the offensive game plan to the media. The only truth now is Mason is a former Jet.

This was a failed free agent signing from the start. Mason was originally brought in to replace fan favorite Jerricho Cotchery, which infuriated the fanbase. It was later revealed Cotchery wanted to be traded because he wouldn't be given the chance to start. But it looked for a long time the Jets had deemed Mason a better player than Cotchery, an obvious misjudgment.

But Mason soon became a must-sign when Cotchery was sent to the Steelers. The Jets did win a small free agent battle and Ryan said Mason would catch 80 passes this season, again, a complete misjudgment. Mason, however, has been terrible and has no business being on the team.

Now he's not.

Let's hope this is a wakeup call to Plaxico Burress and Santonio Holmes. The Jets need a spark and maybe this negative one will turn into a positive. Burress and Holmes need something to turn their seasons around, maybe this is it for them. Either way, we'll see how the offense responds Monday night.
