Plainville's Koutouvides, Bristol's Ware Released On Cut-Down Day

It hasn't been a good couple days for our area NFL players. First, on Friday, New Britain's David Reed, a member of the Baltimore Ravens, was suspended for one game for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. The suspension, which stemmed from an incident you can read about below, was expected. He will return to the team in Week 2.

But two other area players won't be as lucky - at least as it stands now. Plainville's Niko Koutouvides and Bristol's Sean Ware were released today by the Patriots and Panthers, respectively.

Koutouvides signed just recently with New England and had a standout preseason. He had three tackles and a sack against his former team, the Buccaneers, in the second preseason game. Koutouvides added two tackles, including a sack, against the Lions in the third preseason game. But he did not show up in the stat sheet in the team's final preseason game against the Giants.

Ware, a linebacker with the Panthers, had an uphill battle to earn a roster spot with the team. He recorded two solo tackles this preseason. Ware was on the Panthers' practice squad last year and could land on that list again this year.

Bristol's Aaron Hernandez, our fourth NFL player, was a lock to make the Patriots roster as a tight end.
