D.J. Hernandez Resigns As Southington High Football Coach

For the second year in a row Southington football will be looking for a new head football coach. Roughly one year ago Bill Mella resigned from the spot to take an assistant football coach job with Wesleyan University and now another Blue Knights head coach has left for a position with a college football team. D.J. Hernandez resigned Tuesday after one season at Southington to accept an assistant coach position with Brown University. Hernandez, the former Bristol Central and UConn star player, will coach quarterbacks at the university.

The search for a new head football coach at Southington will begin immediately, the school announced Tuesday.

Hernandez was 8-2 with the Blue Knights but had two lowlights with the team. He was suspended one game for using a wrist-band play-card that was left on the field by an opposing team during the season. He and his team also failed to qualify for the state playoffs on the final day of the season, losing to Cheshire in the Apple Valley Classic.

We'll have more on this story on the next episode of Sports Page Online, which is all-new this Thursday. In the meantime, watch Monday night's episode right now at the top of the website.
