UConn Football To Hire Whipple

Reports from Florida have the UConn Huskies hiring former Miami offensive coordinator Mark Whipple as the team's next head coach. The Associated Press reports the deal is in the final stages, although nothing will be announced until Thursday. Whipple would replace Randy Edsall, who left to coach Maryland after the team's Fiesta Bowl loss. Whipple was the offensive coordinator at Miami the last two seasons under coach Randy Shannon, who was fired after this season. He was not retained by new coach Al Golden.

Whipple won a Division I-AA title at UMass in 1998. He also was the quarterbacks coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The UConn job would be Whipple's first at the Division I level.
